The best way to start is to research the keywords and phrases that are most relevant to your website and content. This will help give you a better understanding of what people are searching for and what keywords will help attract your audience.
Even if you’re a SEO beginner, there are various tools that you can use to simplify this process. Google Keyword Planner lets you know which keywords are most searched, while SEMrush will give you detailed competitor analysis.
Now there’s more skill involved than sprinkling your keyword into your content and hoping that Google takes note of your page. After carefully selecting your keyword, there are some essential places to include it in your content:
- In the title of your post
- In the first 300 words of your text
- In your H1 and H2 titles
Create genuine content
Like any piece of content you create, you want your writing to sound genuinely like you. Don’t assume that having your keywords in every sentence is going to make you the winning result in a Google search, it doesn’t work like that. Structuring your content and being tactical with your keywords is crucial, as you want your keywords peppered naturally throughout your content.
Remember that people read your content for you, whatever niche you focus on. You’re writing because you want to give value to your audience and that’s coming from a genuine place. You’re not writing for Google, you’re writing for people!
Google knows this too. The algorithm checks for things like bounce rate (how many people leave your website after visiting your landing page). If you’re content doesn’t engage your readers once they have clicked on your blog, then this will ultimately hurt your SERP ranking. Son content, as ever, is king.
Use related words
A great way to boost your on-page SEO is to not only use the selected keyword carefully, but to use synonyms of that keyword.
This is a really simple way to help Google better understand your content and improve your ranking.
Example: If your keyword is “spring fashion inspiration” then you can use words such as “style”, “spring/summer”, “seasonal” and “trend”. This enables Google to work out how relevant your content is for the audience and rank it better accordingly.
An important tip for any SEO writer or blogger is to build the interaction readers have with your content. Essentially, you don’t want them to land on your blog and then immediately leave. You want them to explore more and engage and search engines love this too! This can be built from people searching or following a link to your website from social media, to building the interaction people have when reading your post.
Internal links throughout your piece of content will also help readers discover other related content on your blog. By linking to another relevant page on your site, this will increase the usability of your website and help you to rank higher in SERPs. Including 1-2 internal links per post is ideal.
